In fact, show-runner Dave Erickson says he’ll be back this season. As for who might replace her at the center, sure, there’s always Nick, but there’s actually one other character who could perhaps do the job better: Daniel Salazar, who-surprise!-is apparently not actually dead. There’s no bringing him back now, but there is still a long-term solution for the series: either develop Madison, or allow her to fade onto the back burner where she currently belongs. Instead, the drama let Travis go as the plot changed locations-and story beats-yet again. Besides, keeping him alive would have also bolstered the drama’s fascinating focus on non-traditional family units, as it would have forced Nick and Alicia to look to their stepfather for all of their support. Travis had his detractors in the beginning, but by the end of Season 2 he had the show’s most interesting narrative arc-one that seemed to have boundless destinations. Nick and Alicia will likely always be safe: the young Clarks are easily the show’s most charismatic players, and although Alicia can sometimes receive some baffling writing in service of plot-why did she almost go off with a bunch of pirates, again?-she, like Nick, remains a fan favorite. After two full seasons, the Clark matriarch remains largely an empty shell-a woman clearly forged in the mold of Rick Grimes, with the terrible decision-making skills and fierce protective streak to match, but not much else. Truthfully, Madison’s death might have made more sense. And it’s that decision that highlights exactly how this show squanders its own potential time and time again. In Season 2’s final few episodes, Travis had toughened up and become a character that could really help the show along-an opportunity that Season 3, unfortunately, has decided to completely forgo. Last season, Nick was the emotional core of the series, as Frank Dillane performed most of the heavy lifting-at least, until Travis lost his son, Chris. Madison keeps asking for Travis, who has been cordoned off into a group of people meant to be killed-along with Nick and his girlfriend from La Colonia, Luciana. They’re quickly detained by what appears to be a border patrol militia. Madison’s group, however, finds a harrowing sight: the dead bodies of, presumably, the group Nick came with. They’re hoping to track down Nick, who left the Mexican sanctuary along with all of its people in search of a new safe haven. The season premiere opens on Madison, Travis, and company arriving at the U.S.
